"You're a guest here!" Jessica is furious, but there's something underlying the anger that Angelo doesn't want to think too hard about. "I can't believe you'd treat my home like your own personal bordello."
"I never brought anyone into the house." His perfect defense rings hollow, and he can't meet her eyes.
"How can you consider that an excuse?" She makes an inarticulate sound of frustration, fanning his own anger to life. "Your behavior is absolutely..."
"If my behavior bothers you so much, you could just marry me, you know!"
He's fairly sure the connection only makes sense in his head. He's absolutely positive he didn't mean to say it aloud.
"Fine, I will!"
Uncomfortable silence descends between them. Angelo suspects Jessica is just as confused by what transpired as he is.
"Well. I'm glad that's settled," he says when the silence becomes oppressive.
He expects her to come to her senses, for the fight to resume and his slip of the tongue to be forgotten. He doesn't look at her, fearing she'll see that he's poised between hoping for just such a response, and dreading it.
He's unprepared for her lips on his cheek, phantom light. "So am I."
