Jessica's room wasn't far from the one Angelo shared with Eight. He knocked, waited, knocked again, and was debating a third try when the door opened to reveal Jessica, looking sleepy and tousled and annoyed.
So beautiful she nearly took his breath away.
"I'm sorry," he said, before she could speak.
She shook her head and pulled her robe a bit more tightly around her. "Angelo, what..."
"For all of it." He reached out to cup her cheek; she stared at him and blinked, but didn't pull away. "The way I behaved during the celebration at Trodain. The way I left after."
She was leaning into his touch, perhaps unconsciously. He wanted to be heartened by that, but there was a slight frown on her face as she studied him. "It's the middle of the night. I'm not going to stand here and talk."
"Jess, please..." He stopped before he could beg, knowing if she demanded it, he would do just that.
Her hand covered his; she turned her head, kissing his palm. The cold which had coiled inside him since he felt his second chance slipping away loosened and turned to warmth as he followed her into her room.
