Jessica dodged back as the hood flung dirt and pebbles at them, narrowly avoiding the attack. A stream of profanity from Yangus-and a more subdued, but equally colorful, curse from Angelo-told her they hadn't been as lucky, and she spared them both a quick glance before returning her attention to the monster.
It was charging toward her, swinging an axe that dwarfed Yangus's.
Eight and Angelo cast their spells at the same time, but it was Angelo's killing curse which sent the hood crashing face-first to the ground, Angelo who was beside her a moment later, breathing more heavily than he had any right to after the brief battle.
"Are you all right?" he demanded, turning her toward him in a proprietary manner that made her temper flare.
She pulled away. "I'm fine." There was blood on his face where one of the rocks had struck him, and even as annoyed as she was, she had to quell a reflexive desire to reach up and wipe it away. "Thank you."
"I certainly couldn't allow my favorite companion to come to harm," he said, and kissed her.
Which meant, of course, she had to slap him.
But she didn't.
